I'm considering using JBOD2312S2SP shelves in a non-clustered Storage Spaces deployment - project requirements are 100TB, expandable, fast, but uptime is not critical, so the relatively cheap Intel shelves seem like a good fit. However, I'm not completely clear on a certain point. The connectivity configuration guide here refers exclusively to SAS drives, but what about SATA? JBOD2312S2SP is specified as having a single ported SAS backplane, but it has a dual port SAS expander in the back, and it is specified as being capable of cascading up to four deep. Is it possible to connect JBOD2312S2SP shelves full of SATA drives to two dual-port SAS HBAs like this:

...and will it protect the system against a single cable, shelf, or HBA failure? Assuming OS being Windows Server 2012 R2, and the drives configured in a mirrored storage space.
